● What is cellulite ? back to top Cellulite is the dimpled orange peel appearance of the skin that can occur on hips, thighs, and buttocks. Cellulite is much more common in women than in men because of differences in the way fat, muscle, and connective tissue are distributed.
Female hormones may play a part in contributing to this fat distribution, but cellulite is not treatable by hormone therapy.
What happens is fibrous tissue connects the skin to deeper tissue layers and also separate compartments that contain fat cells. When fat cells increase in size, these compartments bulge and produce a waffled appearance of the skin. Imagine a bag made from elastic bands full of eggs.
Cellulite is a type of fatty tissue in the subcutaneous layer of the skin that contains constricting bands of connective tissue. This connective tissue interlaced with fat cells, is held in place by a network of fibres that protects our organs and muscles. The network is surrounded by liquid that nourishes and provide an effective waste system. When all is in good working order the system waste products are removed from the body but when fats, fluids and toxins are trapped deep in the skin the connective tissue thickens and hardens, giving a dimpling effect. When we age the skin layer thins resulting in the rippled appearance of cellulite.
How much fat you have depend
on weight, lifestyle and genetics. Fat insulates the body and protects
the inner body. Cellulite is lumpy and provides no protection at all. It
appears in certain areas of the body- thighs, buttocks, abdomen and
breasts. Men can get cellulite sometimes in the neck and abdomen. Cellulite can appear on any body type. You don't have to be over weight to have cellulite. Diet and lifestyle can affect cellulite but a big part of cellulite is toxins and fat that build up in the body.
Several factors influence cellulite and how much
they have. Including genes, gender, amount body fat, age, skin
thickness, and a Sluggish Lymphatic System.
