● What is folliculitis ? back to top Sometimes its called "razor bumps" and "barber's itch" Folliculitis is inflammation of hair follicles of the skin. Most of your skin is covered with small hairs which grow out of hair follicles. Generally Folliculitis is due to an infection with a bacterium germ called Staphylococcus aureus. The affected hair follicles swell into pus-filled pimples. Each pimple appears like a small, round, white-headed pimples around one or more hair follicles.
They occur in groups, often where hair follicles are damaged by shaving ect or where the hair follicle is blocked. Sometimes steroid creams can trigger folliculitis. The most common area affected is the facial shaving area of men especially when the hair is course. Other areas for folliculitis are arms, legs, armpits and buttocks.
Folliculitis should not be confused with acne or boils- boils are normally single and larger. Acne can look like folliculitis but often with folliculitis you can see a trapped hair underneath but if your not sure see your skin care professional to find out.
● Types of Folliculitis back to top Barber's itch Itchy, white, pus-filled lumps in the beard area or on the legs or underarms in women often after hair removal. It happens when hair follicles irritated by shaving become infected with staph bacteria.
Tinea barbae Caused by a fungus this kind of folliculitis also develops in the beard area. Similar symptoms to barber's itch and the surrounding skin can also become red and inflamed form of the infection. Pus-filled bumps that form a crust and that can cause pain, swollen lymph nodes and a fever.
Pseudofolliculitis barbae This is an inflammation of the hair follicle in the beard area, pseudofolliculitis barbae affects men with curly beard hair. It happens when shaved hairs curve back into the skin, leading to inflammation and occasionally keloid scars on the face and neck.
Pityrosporum folliculitis Chronic, red itchy bumps on the back and chest, neck, shoulders, upper arms and face. Caused by yeast-like fungus infection called malassezia furfur. It is similar to the fungus that causes dandruff, although the pimples look like acne.
Herpetic folliculitis
Shaving over
a cold sore can sometimes spread the infection to
neighbouring hair follicles. Caused by bacteria that thrive in a range of environments, including wooden hot tubs with chlorine and pH levels aren't regulated correctly. Hours after being exposed to this bacteria, you can develop a red, round, itchy bumps that may develop into small pus-filled blisters. The rash can be worse where your swimsuit holds contaminated water against your skin.
Boils and carbuncles When a hair follicle become deeply infected with bacteria a boil can suddenly appear, a painful pink or red bump about 1cm which fills with pus. The surrounding skin also may be red and swollen. It grows larger and more painful for up to seven days, it can become the size of a golf-ball ! it develops a yellow/white head that eventually ruptures and drains. A carbuncle is a crop of boils. Carbuncles cause a deeper larger infection than a normal single boil.
Gram-negative folliculitis This is most common in people receiving long-term antibiotic treatment for acne, which alter the normal balance of bacteria in the nose, leading to an overgrowth of harmful organisms. Although this doesn't cause problems for most people, for an unlucky few Gram-negative bacteria spread to the cheeks, chin and jaw line, where they cause new, sometimes severe acne.
● Treatment for folliculitis back to top The use Sesderma Azelac products can help clear folliculitis and prevent it becoming worse. Apply a warm, moist face cloth to the affected area. Avoid shaving irritated skin.
For more severe folliculitis a course of antibiotic tablets may be needed, see your doctor.
