Rosacea
Rosacea is a condition affecting the skin on the face, especially the
area where people blush. Rosacea usually starts with redness on the
cheeks and can slowly worsen to include one or more additional symptoms
and areas, also the eyes.
Changes are gradual, and it could be hard to recognize it in the early
stages.
Unfortunately, many people mistake rosacea for sunburn, a change of
complexion or acne, and they don't consult a doctor. Rosacea cannot be
cured, but controlled.
Signs
The first signs of rosacea look like a blush or
sunburn (when a lot of blood rushes to the blood vessels just under the
skin, and the vessels expand to handle the flow). Redness gradually
becomes more noticeable and won't disappear.
Later, pimples may appear on the face. These inflamed pimples can be
small, red and solid, called papules, or pus-filled pustules like
juvenile acne. The difference between acne and rosacea is that in
rosacea normally there are not blackheads or whiteheads, which are
usually seen in acne. When they blush, the small blood vessels on the
face become bigger, eventually showing through the skin. These enlarged
blood vessels look like thin red lines on the face. Doctors call these
lines telangiectasias.
Treatment
When rosacea is not treated, some people,
especially men, may eventually get small knobby bumps on the nose. As
more bumps appear, the nose looks swollen. This condition is called
rhinophyma. The good news is that rosacea can be controlled. Treatments
include systemic antibiotics (tetracyclines) and metronidazol. Topical
and dietetic treatments are also important. Products containing azelaic
and salicylic acid are very useful. Enlarged blood vessels may be
effectively treated with Diode Lasers. Topical application of Vitamin K
may reduce the size of these small blood vessels. Your dermatologist can
help determine which treatments are better for you.
