What are Thread Veins ? Back to top

Thread veins or spider veins, broken capillaries, angiomas, sunburst varicosities, telangiectasias are a cosmetic problem for millions of people. Thread vein can appear on any part of your body.
Mostly relatively harmless and painless, thread veins could slowly increase in size if left untreated.

Thread veins are tiny capillaries that have been stretched so often by the pressure from larger veins that they have become permanently dilated, this dilation weakens the capillary walls causing them to rupture easily. When the walls rupture blood seeps out and flows down along the pathway made by surrounding capillaries. When the blood dries the result is a thread like bruise we know as a thread vein.

So far scientific research has not found all the reasons why Thread veins occur. Theory's include genetics, and that estrogen weakens capillary walls, the chances of developing thread veins increases with the use of birth control pills, estrogen replacement therapy and pregnancy. Other causes include obesity, lack of exercise and sun damage, but generally its aging that dilates and weakens the capillary walls which in turn increases the chances of Thread veins. Thread veins can sometimes be a sign of rosacea or can result from overuse of steroid creams.

Micro sclerotherapy Back to top
Micro sclerotherapy is relatively simple non surgical treatment which takes 30-40 mins. It involves injecting the thread vein with a very fine needle filled with a chemical called a "sclerosant", this chemical causes inflammation in the veins wall and will destroy the vein over several weeks making it much less noticeable or disappear completely.

The vein walls that have been damaged by the injection are slowly removed by the body's natural defence mechanisms. Once the vein has been injected it can take between two weeks and three months for it to completely disappear.
Most small, clearly visible thread veins can be treated. Several treatments may be needed depending on the size of the area of thread veins.

Laser and IPL Back to top
Lasers and IPL can be used to remove thread veins on the face, body and legs 1-3 mm in size . Laser treatments will remove fine and large thread veins quickly and effectively two or five treatments are usually needed.

Vitamin K Back to top

This nutrient responsible for helping blood clot, Vitamin K won't do much for your skin taken orally, but studies showed that topical vitamin K works well to reduce circles under the eye as and bruises. Doctors found that skin treatments with vitamin K cream after laser surgery significantly reduced bruising.

Also used as a treatment for thread veins, topical Vitamin K enters through the pores and goes all the way to the damaged capillary or artery and helps to clot the blood, thus stopping any seepage (often the cause of dark circles) and allowing the tissue to heal itself.
