Wound Guide

Wounds with stitches

Precautions

Wound with Stitches  back to top
About 1 out of 100 wounds will be infected, no matter what you do. Follow these directions for the healing process and to help prevent infection.

Leave the bandage on for 24 hours (remove the day after surgery).
Wash the wound twice a day with hydrogen peroxide at 3%. After washing with hydrogen peroxide, apply SilkSeS Cream to the wound and cover it with a Band-Aid. It is a protective, antiseptic, silicone ointment containing Mimosa extract and Vitamin A, which help to prevent infection and also prevent the bandage from sticking to the wound.

There is no problem in having a shower. Keep the wound covered when bathing and clean it afterwards as mentioned.

If your wound is on the scalp, it is not necessary to cover it with a bandage. Simply clean the wound as instructed above and apply SilkSeS. Shampooing the scalp is not a problem, but be gentle.

Studies show that wounds covered with a dressing heal faster than uncovered wounds.

It is an old wives tale that uncovered wounds heal faster.

Discomfort, swelling and bruising occur between 6-20 hours after surgery. If it aches, take

Tylenol or Dolalgial. Also if the pain is persistent, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Do not take aspirin or alcohol for three days after the surgery because they would make the blood thin (easier to bleed).

Removing stitches is painless and is done 7-14 days after surgery, depending on the location and type of surgery.

Precautions back to top
If the skin around the wound becomes red, swollen and painful, you may have an infected wound. Call your doctor and make an appointment immediately.

It is normal for the wound to drain small amounts of clear or red fluid. If the wound drains white-yellow fluid or pus call your doctor immediately. Not to call can have serious consequences.

If the wound starts bleeding, hold a gauze or a cotton on the area and pressure for 10 minutes. If the wound continues bleeding, contact your doctor.
It is recommended not to swim in chlorinated or other waters, no matter where the wound is located.

Wounds on the face usually heal between one or two weeks. Wounds on arms, trunk and upper legs heal in about three weeks. Wounds on the lower legs, especially in people who are more than forty years old, can take up to 3 months to heal. If you are not sure if your wound is healing, please call your doctor.
